Appointed to the position of Director of the KZN Catholic Schools Office in January 2021, Mark has had a varied career.

After completing his schooling at St. Henry’s Marist Brothers College, he attended the University of Natal (Durban), graduating with a B. A. and HDE. He then taught for six years in Durban high schools, completing an Honours degree in History, before leaving the teaching profession for the private sector.

Mark spent 17 years in the corporate world, building a career in the Human Resources arena. On completion of a Master’s degree, he ventured into the consulting world, focusing on organization and people development with specific focus on strategy development, change management and personal development and coaching. He consulted to a range of clients in both the private and public sectors and worked in several African countries, working from Executive to shop-floor levels.

Although not involved directly in the world of education, he stayed connected, consulting to several schools in both the private and public sectors. In addition, he was a member of the Governing Body of Our Lady of Fatima Dominican Convent School for more than twenty years.

Mark has been married to Lyn, a high school teacher for more than 35 years and they have two children; Greig, an advocate, and Lauren, a school teacher.

Central to Mark’s work for the past fifteen years or so has been the notion of ‘Purpose’. This he sees as the key to a meaningful existence for both individuals and organisations. Further to this, he believes that everyone has a special contribution to make and that we owe it to ourselves to find out what it is that we can offer our world.

He believes that teachers have the power to change the world and that Catholic education has the added responsibility of ensuring that it is changed for the better. It is this responsibility and opportunity that excites Mark about the work of the Catholic Schools Office.
