Born and bred in Durban, Craig grew up in Sydenham and, as an active member of the St. Anne’s parish, he fell under the influence of Fr. Danker.

Craig’s journey in education began in 1985 when he enrolled at Bechet College of Education. After the completion of his teaching diploma, he started teaching at Chelmsford Primary School in Newcastle, KZN.

Moving away from his home was a particular challenge to Craig as he had been an active member of the community and, in particular, St. Anne’s, and this he obviously had to forego.

In 1990, he returned to familiar territory when he was given the opportunity to become a member of the St Henry’s Marist Brothers College family. It was a monumental step in that he was the first teacher of colour in the school’s history.

Starting his tenure that was to last for 25 years, Craig’s first role was as a primary school educator and sport coach. He was later promoted to the position as Head of Department of the Intermediate Phase.

His development in the field of Catholic education was enhanced by the formation he received from the Marist Brothers. Craig is especially grateful for the privilege of participating in the Marist pilgrimage to Italy and France which he describes as a life-defining experience.

During his tenure at St. Henry’s, Craig completed a qualification in Education Management, Law and Policy through the University of Pretoria. In addition, he completed the CIE-sponsored programmes, Echoing The Word and Sharing Our Call.

Leaving the Marist fold for the business world, Craig re-entered the education arena a while later to teach at St. Anthony’s Catholic Primary School. After teaching there for two years, he joined the KZN Catholic Schools Office in 2018.

Here he works as a Field-worker and sees the role and its responsibilities as helping him fulfil his life’s purpose.
